He was predeceased by: his parents, Esther Bates, (Valentine) and Russell Bates, Jr.; his brother Ammerson "Chico" Bates; and his grandson Averie Kinney. He is survived by: his son Chad Bates; his stepdaughter Amie Kinney; his grandchildren, Craig Kinney-Thompson, Jason and Jayden Lytle; and his siblings, Toni Bates, Kathaleen Graham (Richard), Celeste Bates (Michelle), Raynell Bates and Russell Bates, III. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
