He was predeceased by: his parents, Orville Elsworth and Anna Mae Cooper; and his grandson Jeffrey Smalling. He is survived by: his wife Sallie Cooper; his brother Orville Eugene "Gene" Cooper; his children, Steve Cooper (John Entwistle), Mary Smalling (Curtis) and Chris Cooper (Eleanor); his grandchildren, Alysia Cooper, Kyle Smalling (Laura), Eve Trabel, Randy Bassett (Hannah), Seth Smalling (Miranda) and Jon Edward Cooper; his aunt Mary Young; and his brother-in-law Donald McCullough. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
