He was predeceased by: his wife Ellen; his parents, George Helm and Ruth Helm; and his son Geoffrey. He is survived by: his sons, Gregory Helm (Xiaomei Zhang) of Dayton and Eric Helm of Dayton; his siblings, Linda Scott of Huber Heights, Kathy Helm of Columbus and David Helm of Bellingham, WA; his granddaughters, Emily, Gretel and Genevieve Helm; and his friend Elizabeth Zimmerman.
