He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parent Senator Schuring; his wife Darlene (Newkirk); his son J. Derrick; his daughter-in-law Allison (McDaniel); his daughter Kristin; his grandchildren, Preston, Parker, Quinn, Owen, Everett and Lucy; his sister Diane McAndrew (Schuring); his brother-in-law Michael McAndrew; his brother David; his siblings-in-law, Kathy Newkirk and Sam Bellino; his brother Bill; and his sister-in-law Marti Newkirk.
