He was predeceased by: his parents, Jay Glenn Gates, Sr. and Laura June Davis Gates; and his brother Hobie Gates. He is survived by: his wife Barbara S. Fife Gates; his children, Paul Eugene Gates of Scio and Melissa Shaffer of Ravenna; his grandchildren, Olivia Nichols and Greycen Shaffer; his siblings, Jay Gates, Jr. (Mary Ellen) of Amsterdam, George Gates (Diana) of Scio, Ed Gates (Joel) and Cathy Smith (Jeff) of Mineral City; and his aunts and uncles, Keith Gates (Lois), Marclene Bailey of Windsor, Edith Rubino, Natalie Matthews, Herbert Davis, Dwight Davis (Wilma) and Janie Rubright. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
