He was predeceased by: his parents, Adrian H. Smythe and Julia T. Smythe (Kimak); his former wife Beverly Smythe; his wife Sharon "MiMi" Smythe; and his brothers, James and Robert Smythe.

He is survived by: his children, Kimberly Gardner (Keith) of Brilliant, OH, Patricia Ann Kenny of Tallapoosa, GA, Darla Robinson of Mingo Junction, OH and Thomas Zook (Tina) of Wintersville, OH. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
