He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo August and Loretta Schmelzer (Weisenberger); his siblings, Leo, Francis and Veronica Hammond; his son-in-law Steve German; and his great grandchildren, Rosalie Murrey and Celesta Hommel.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Eleanor Schmelzer (Nash); his children, David (Beatrice), Teresa German (Steve), John Kavin (Maria), Jeffrey Schmelzer (Celesta), Debbie Shaffer (Darren), Denise Primmer (Dennis) and Edward (Janet); and his brother James (Barbara). He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
