He was predeceased by: his siblings, Leroy, Jimmy, Mose, Bose, Thea, Shirley, Charlotte and Judy; and his parents, Isome Sturgill and Vera Sturgill.

He is survived by: his wife Joann Sturgill; his children, Rita Helton (Rick), Pam Burton (Jerry), Bob Sturgill Jr. (Terri), Ed Sturgill, Don Sturgill, Donna Owens (Tim), Charissa, Tasha, Ricki, Randall, Paula, Bobby, Melissa, Katrina, Daniel, Timothy, Morgan, Colton and Jordan; and his siblings, Janice Rhymer and Jack Sturgill (Pam). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many dear friends.
