He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Rufus Apthorp, Jr. and Mary Louise Apthorp (Swartz); and his son Carl Rufus Apthorp IV. He is survived by: his daughters, Lucy Leske of Nantucket, Massachusetts and Jenny Paradis of Nantucket, Massachusetts; his nephew Geoff Apthorp of St. Augustine, Florida; his niece Lisa Doyle of Newbury; and his grandchildren, Justine Paradis of Concord, Liza Paradis of Leavenworth, Washington, Colin Leske of Encinitas, California and Wyatt Leske of Plymouth, Massachusetts..

In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Western Reserve Academy or Amherst College.
