He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Aten and Alma Rhea Aten (Smeltzer); his wife Mary L. Steward; and his son Samuel. He is survived by: his son James "Jim" Aten of Ashland; and his grandchildren, Stephanie Pooler of Virginia, Derrick Aten of Ashland and Michael Aten (Sinclair) of Loudonville.
