He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Schmitt and Edna Schmitt (Schneider); his stepfather Raymond Morris; his stepson Jeffrey Koch; and his siblings, Edna "Susie" Zuver, Richard Schmitt, Teddy Schmitt and Rosie Schmitt.
He is survived by: his wife Kathaleen K. "Fred" Schmitt of Alvordton, Ohio; his children, Shari Tait (Troy) of Texas, Gerald Schmitt, Jr. (Robin) of Texas and Lisa Repp (Charles "Shag") of Kunkle, Ohio; his stepchildren, Danny Koch (Marissa) of Alvordton, Patricia Koch of Montpelier and Howard Koch, Jr. (Anna) of Bryan, Ohio; and his siblings, Robert Schmitt of Mercedes, Judy DeGroff of West Unity, Joseph Schmitt (Susan) of Syracuse, Raymond Morris (Angela) of Tennessee and Sharon Waggoner (Ken) of West Unity, Ohio.. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
