He was predeceased by: his parents, John Alfred Dettling, Jr. and Hazel Diener Dettling; and his siblings, Joan Botdorf, Thomas Dettling and James Dettling.
He is survived by: his wife Marjorie Beringer; and his children, John C. (Jacqueline) of Arlington, Rosemary of Chevy Chase, Karen Stultz (John) of Reston, Gail Morrison (David) of Cleveland and Scott (Karrie) of Akron. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren.
