He was predeceased by: his father Howard R. Thornton; his grandmother Josephine Dean; and his close friend Dr. William O'Byrne. He is survived by: his mother Kathryn J. Thornton; his close friend John "Chip" Holmes; his niece Katie; his brother Donald (Julie); his nephew Aaron; his niece Kristen; his uncle Gerald "Biggie" Thornton; his aunt Evalee McKinney; and also, Victoria and Tucker.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "The Benefit Fund in Memory of Ray Thornton" at People's Bank, 421 Main Street, Point Pleasant, WV 25550 sponsored by the PPHS Class of 1986.

“I just learned of Ray's sad passing from the Juilliard Journal which I received yesterday. I started working there in the Registrar's Office in 1991 and saw him frequently; he was an exceptional person, exceedingly kind, and a stellar student and pianist. Knowing him, I'm sure he was an exceptional doctor too and will certainly be deeply missed by many! Andy King”

Ray was never a student of mine (I thought French and Italian language and culture for 32 years at Juilliard) but I knew Ray as everyone at Juilliard did. He was a stellar student and a prince of a man and I hope knowing that he was admired by so many people will make his absence a bit more bearable for you. You have my heartfelt condolences.
