He was predeceased by: his parents, John T. O'Brien Sr. and Helen L. O'Brien; and his sister Bonnie Gallagher. He is survived by: his wife Janet O'Brien (Robinson); his children, Kevin O'Brien, Chris O'Brien (Agnes) and Marissa Knees (Brian); his former wife Mary Clare O'Brien (Scolaro); his grandchildren, Anthony, Caitlyn, Derek, David, Nathan, Isabel and Bryson; and his sister Barbara Vacca (Jerome). He is also survived by loving in-laws, cousins, nephews, a niece, and long-time friends.
