He was predeceased by: his former wife Nancy Halpin-Matus; and his wife Kathleen Quinn. He is survived by: his children, Jean Matus Vlacich (Ed), Wendy Matus and Joseph R. Matus (Annie); his stepdaughter Meaghan Krazinski (Brandon); his grandchildren, Jake, Hope (Nick Franzese), Noah and Ella; his stepgrandson Sam Siver (Matt); his stepgreat-grandchildren, Hudson and Delaney; and also, Gilbert Matus and Margaret Eagan.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, a cause Joe was passionate about supporting.
