He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Coates and Iva Coates (Houghtaling); his son Michael Coates; his daughter-in-law Nancy German; and his grandson Joseph Greak.

He is survived by: his son Edwin Coates; and his grandchildren, Sarah, Robert, Tyler, Ashley and Melissa.
