He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles Townsend and Mary'Leola'Creighton Townsend; his wife Beverly (Bev); his daughter Patricia (Pat); and his sister Carmen.

He is survived by : his daughter Carol; his son-in-law Steve; and his grandchildren, Kyle and Megan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

“Uncle Mel you have always been special to me and I miss you already. I will never forget the many events over the years. When that fire siren went off you flew and served many years. You have helped many people over the years. If you recall when Carmen passed away you came into the bedroom explained mom's passing to me "your mom has gone to sleep". I was so confused for a while but soon figured out that Mom had passed away. At this time it is Steve your uncle Mel has gone to sleep. RIP”
