He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Nelson; and his brothers, Alvin and David. He is survived by: his children, David Nelson (Ruth), Jay Nelson (Adalia), Karen Nelson and Dawn Patterson (Jerry); and his grandchildren, Joshua (Elisa), Tara, Nia and Mya. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
