He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert E. Hayes and Hazel Mahoney Hayes; his wife Margaret "Peggy" Brazell; and his siblings, Mary Elizabeth Donahue (James), Henriette Lodes, Theresa Mosedale (James), Lucy Henson, Roseanne Goodnough (Murray), Robert E. (Shirley), Jack P. (Ginny), Edward J., Leo F., Gus (William) and Master Sergeant Jeremiah T. Hayes.
He is survived by: his children, Colleen of Camillus, Sean of Solvay, Kevin (Christine) of Parish, Joseph Jr. (Michelle) and Brian (Enrique) of Syracuse; his granddaughters, Marissa and Angelica of Syracuse; his great grandchild CJ; his sister Margaret (Peggy); his brother-in-law Paul Henson of Altmar; and his pets, Max and Chester.
