He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis Sauer and Elizabeth Sauer; his siblings, Theresa Leeds, Helen Lievre, Dorothy Myer and Henry Sauer; and his granddaughter Mindy Lee Sauer.

He is survived by: his children, Joe, Cliff and Sue; his wife Jeanette; his children, Catherine (Jim Hangate) of Mass, Susan (Victor Sachar) of Mt. Marion, Richard Sauer (Mary Ellen Boice) of Mt. Marion, Joseph Sauer (Mary) of Mt. Marion and Clifford Sauer (Indira Velasquez) of Mt. Marion; and his sister Mildred Anger. He is also survived by 15 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
