He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Captain John N. Matthews and Dorothy Webb Matthews; his siblings, John, Robert, Richard, Jane and Lucille; his wife Cynthia Hackney; his children, Thérèse Matthews (Agustín Edwards), Kathryn Matthews, Brian Matthews (Leslie) and Sharon Matthews (Fernando Zegers); his grandchildren, William, Henry and Anne Greer; and his children, Rachel, Justin, Catherine, Joe Matthews, Emilia, Olivia and Tomás Zegers Matthews.
In 1989, he was inducted to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta where he participated in countless acts of charity, including taking those in need of healing on pilgrimages to Lourdes, France.
