Though Richard may no longer walk beside us, his spirit lives on in the memories and the legacy Richard leaves behind.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert C. Canfield and Gladys Kent Portner; and his brother Herbert. He is survived by: his sister Thelma Chase of Oneida, NY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; a great-great niece and nephews; several close friends; and cousins.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 28th 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church (200 N James St, Rome, NY 13440). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 28th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

Joe Shea wrote a sympathy message

“Condolences to family and friends! I knew Rich for more than 40 years. I met him in Rome. We became friends, played golf for a few years and stayed in touch. I now live in South Carolina. During this past summer my wife and I visited Rome and made it a point to see Rich. Rich called me a short time ago at my home. He was in the hospital recovering from a collapsed lung. I couldn’t imagine it would be the last time I would talk to him. Rich was a great friend, He will be missed.”
