He was predeceased by: his parents, Isabelino Maldonado Nazario and Tomasa Aulet Carrion; and his son Nelson Maldonado of Pinecrest Seminary. He is survived by: his spouse Pura Marrero Rivera; his son Dr. Joseph R. Maldonado, Jr.; his nephew Dario (Norma Otero); his brother Carmelo; and his sister-in-law Cynthia Marrero. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 15th 2025 at 7:00 PM at the Maranatha Church (620 N Washington St, Rome, NY 13440). Visitation was held on Thursday, January 16th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home Inc. - Rome (418 N George St, Rome, NY 13440).

Dr. Andrew Zaleski and wife Eva wrote a sympathy message

“Dear Joseph and family. Andy and I just found out about the passing of your father and a husband to your mom. It is a sad day when a father and husband departs from us.
