He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo Schaefer and Leona Schaefer. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Schaefer; his brother John "Jack" Schaefer; his children, Robert P Schaefer, Kathleen Preish and Loriann Parmenter (Tom); and his grandchildren, Joshua, Ryan, Bethany, Sean, Rebekah, Sarah, Hannah and Olivia. He is also survived by great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Golisano Children Hospital.
