He is survived by: his wife Yvonne "Bonnie" (Trabold); his children, Kathleen Herbst (John Hensberry), Gerald Merkel, Dr. Paul Merkel (Lori), Robert Merkel (Bonnie) and Dr. Linda Merkel (Betsy Hendrick); his grandchildren, Dana Payne (Gary), Stephanie Herbst (Jonathan Bernier), Christopher Merkel (Kelly), Jessica Hatfield (Steve), Dr. Andrew Merkel (Laura Gardon), Dr. Amanda Lombardozzi (Matthew), Jacob Merkel, Dr. Zachary Merkel (Janie Staravecka), Joshua Merkel, Caitlyn Vitello (J. P.), Michael Hawkins (Greer McIntyre) and Robert Hawkins (Rachael); his great grandchildren, Caden, Carter and Tenley Payne; and his grandchildren, Rylan, Adaline Bernier, Cora, Oakley, Eliza Hatfield, Lucas, Jude, Thomas Merkel, Cameron, Emerson Lombardozzi, Josephine Merkel, Annabelle Vitello, Willa, Walter Hawkins, Thea, Lillian, Calvin and Kendall Hawkins.
