She was loved and cherished by many people including: her spouse George W. Gortmaker; her children, Steve Gortmaker (Betsy Pugh) of Belmont, MA and Linda Simon (English) of Croton; and her siblings, Ruth Sommer (Hans) and Alfred. She was also cherished by wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt, Helen grew up in Chicago with her Norwegian immigrant parents.
