He is survived by: his wife Sharon Rooney; his children, Matthew (Leigha), Anthony Rooney, Andrew Smolkovich (Suzanne), Jennifer Wallace (Mark), Steven Smolkovich, John and Timothy Rooney; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Smolkovich, Luke and Aidan Wallace; and his brother James Rooney (late Eleanor). He is also survived by relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Buffalo or the Parkinson's Foundation of Western New York in John's name.
