He is survived by: his wife Essie Franklin Oates; his children, Shonyta Oates and Oliver Oates, Jr.; his siblings, Benay Whittaker, Beverly Oates, Veronica Hunt, William Oates Jr. and Carl Oates; his nieces, Akilah Oates, Makeda Oates, Erica Oates and Jontil Hunt; his nephew Zuri Barrow; and his pet Jazzy. He is also survived by relatives and lifelong friends.
