He was predeceased by: his parents, Harmon Newell and Mary Newell (Davis); and his brothers, Burt Blackman, William Newell, Harmon Newell and Donald Newell.
He is survived by: his wife Margaret (Pires); his children, Patrick Newell (Aidamarie), Christina May (Robert), Katherine Conant (Larry) and Margaret "Peg" Newell (Arlinda); his grandchildren, Caitlin, Elijah, Miah, Madeline, Arielle, Brad, Jack, Luca and Gabriel; his stepgrandchildren, Joel, Jonah, Joseph, Joanna, Joshua, Jeremy and Chad; and his great grandchildren, Malaya, Isagani and Penelope. He is also survived by five step-grandchildren.
