He was predeceased by: his parents, George Bates and Hazel Bates Lewis; and his siblings, Christina Perkins, Henry Bates, Betty Stevens, Evelyn Graves, G. Donald Bates and Wilma Grey.
He is survived by: his wife Evelyn Sawyer Bates; his children, Brenda Choe (Ki), Timothy Bates and Diana Jones Jr. (Doug); his sister-in-law Helen Sawyer Bates; and his niece Kelley Lea Bates (Root). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
