He was predeceased by: his parents, Clayton Bates and Ida Bates (Frink); and his siblings, Ted, George Bates and June Cooley (Norman).

He is survived by: his wife Bettylou; his children, Daniel Bates (Kelly) of Norwich and Judy Dushko (Joe) of Sherburne; his brother Vern Meeker of Ohio; his grandchildren, Carrie Hitt of Earlville, Lindsey Symonds (Derrick) of Earlville, Kyle Bates (Gabby Megale) of Greene and Tyler Bates of Norwich; and his great grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas Hitt and Kendall Symonds. He is also survived by Several cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Per Denny's wishes, donations in his memory may be made to Betty Bates, 515 County Road 29, Norwich, NY 13815 for the establishment of a college fund for his great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much.
