He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard G. Despaw and Margaret Despaw (Donie); and his sisters, Nancy Purves and Joan James. He is survived by: his wife Sylvia Ann Davis; his children, Shari, Jim Hartigan, Shelly M. Despaw, Sean, Michelle Despaw, Sharlene and Scott Lantry; his grandchildren, Shawn C. (Jodie), Shannon, Lisa (Matt), Sean Michael, Lee, Jessica, Alex, Amy, Nathaniel (Emily), Andrew L., Emily L. and Erin L.; his great grandchild Paul Robert; and his siblings, Sally French of East Syracuse, Billy, Midge Kovach, Terry, Naomie Despaw, Robert and Pat Despaw. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
