He was predeceased by: his parents-in-law, Vito and Rosalie Covais; his siblings, Frank, Anna, Mary and Angelina; his brother-in-law Robert Covais; and his parents, Giacomo Mellaci and Marie Mellaci (Magdeglana).
He is survived by: his wife Lucille (Covais); his children, Joseph Mellaci, Jr. (Mime), Diane Murillo (Richard) and Rosemarie Mondello (Dean); his grandson Joseph Mellaci, III (Kristen); his children, Dean Mondello Jr. (Gabriella Bianco) and VitaBella Lucille Mellaci; his brother Nunzio Mellaci; and his siblings-in-law, Vito and Mimi Covais. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
