Lucia Cusa Obituary
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Lucia Cusa on Nov. 22, 2020. She passed at home, surrounded by loved ones. Having battled Alzheimer's for fifteen years, she peacefully left us to be with Jesus.
She was born to Emilia Wierszylo Gabron and Vincent Gabron in Newburgh, NY on Dec. 23, 1929. Lucia attended Newburgh Free Academy and also attended and graduated from Ellenville High School . She was a supervisor at NY Telephone Company, and a bookkeeper and home designer for her husband's building business.
On July 21, 1957, she married Paul A. Cusa and together they raised seven children: Louise (David) Tryon, Christine Soeltz, Angela (Mark) Callery, Paula Cusa, Paul Cusa, Ann (Richard) Cusa-Keller, Tina (Martin) Harris. Lucia is a cherished grandmother to Paul and Eric Tryon, Kyle and Emilia Soeltz, Leah, Jacqueline and Brooke Callery, Paul Julian Cusa, Greyson Keller and Thomas Harris.
In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, she is also survived by her sister Wanda Johnson in Broomfield, CO, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings: Mitchell Gabron, Frances Morris, Helen Krantz, Gregory Gabron, Edward Gabron, Mary Wakefield, and Valerie Gabron.
Our mom was dedicated to her family. Her devotion had no limits. She had endless energy, a very positive attitude, and an appreciation for the simple things in life. She was hard-working, selfless, generous, humorous and God-loving. She enjoyed cooking, listening to music, dancing, gardening, crocheting, and laughing. She adored her grandchildren and loved life.
Mom's incredible strength continued during the past fifteen years as she bravely endured without a complaint all that Alzheimer's sent her way. Although the disease stripped her of her memories and capacity to care for herself, mom's loving, humble, polite, selfless, humorous, music-loving spirit remained until the end. We learned so much from our dear mom. She was both wise and practical. Her love, her lessons and her indefatigable spirit will live on within us and in the generations that follow. We love her and will miss her tremendously.
We would like to thank the medical professionals, Hospice's nurses and staff,
as well as her wonderful caregivers, including the volunteers of St. Joseph's Helping Hands. We thank everyone for their loving support and prayers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of mom to St. Joseph's Food Pantry https://stjosephnewpaltz.org and/or one of mom's favorite charities, St. Jude Children's Research Center, https://www.stjude.org would be greatly appreciated.
Due to Covid, there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be private at St. Joseph's Church in New Paltz, NY and New Paltz Rural Cemetery. A celebration of Lucia's life will be postponed until a later date.
