He was predeceased by: his parent Frank Shawkey; and his brother Alan. He is survived by: his parent Doris Shawkey; his wife DeAnn Shawkey (Norstrom); his daughter Jane Shawkey-Nye (Brad); his stepdaughters, Heidi Lyon and Marianne Bushman; his granddaughters, Sarah, Michelle, Melissa and Victoria; his great grandchild Mia; and his brothers, James (Vaughn) and Chris (Pamela). He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in John's name to the George F. Johnson Memorial Library in Endicott, NY.
