He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Charles K. Bates and Dorothy Bates; his significant other Dianna Lee Officer; his sons, Jeff and Jeffrey Bates (Stephanie) of Dumfries; his grandchildren, Heather Bates of Wilmington and Zachary Bates of Raleigh; his son James Bates (Beth) of Ashburn; his grandchildren, Sam, Claire Bates of Ashburn and Virginia; his daughter Jennifer LaRoe (Jeff) of Melbourne; and his grandchildren, Rebecca Krassel of Alexandria and Connor Krassel of Melbourne, Florida..
