He was predeceased by: his parents, Ethel Scribner-Schaffer and William Schaffer; his wife Elva Lyndell; his sons, Robert P. Schaffer and Richard C. Schaffer; and his brothers, Robert Schaffer and William Schaffer.
He is survived by: his son David Schaffer (Cindy); his daughter-in-law Jo Ann Schaffer; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Schaffer (Robert Henry), Cara Weber (Donnie), Matthew Schaffer, Amy Meyer (TJ) and Richard E. Schaffer; and his great grandchildren, Beau Henry, Haley Henry, Kylie Meyer, Alyssa Weber, Morgan Schaffer, Abigail Schaffer, Emily Schaffer, Kate Schaffer, Trace Meyer, Rebecca Schaffer and Claire Henry.
