He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Joseph M. Thornton and Marian Thornton (Murphy); and his siblings, Mary Ellen Thornton, Robert Thornton and William Thornton.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Thornton (Skinner); his brother Dr. Joseph T. Thornton (Joan); and his children, Tim Thornton (Mary), Mary Kern (Ed), Kathleen Thornton, Maureen Stathis (David), James "Bam" Thornton, William Thornton (Marie) and Robert Thornton (Joanne). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
