He was predeceased by: his parent Rufus McElwain. He is survived by: his parent Mildred Martin McElwain; his spouse Rita J. Wylie; his children, Ronald McElwain (Paula Ives) of Balston Spa, N. Y., Constance Marlow, Timothy Marlow of Malone, N. Y., Sandra Thomas and Del Ray Thomas of Massena, N. Y.; his sisters, Constance Richards of Davenport and Alma Dumas; his brother-in-law Douglas Dumas of Malone, N. Y.; his foster children, Ashley, Angela, Erin, Meagan and Morgan; his son Brent McElwain; his daughter-in-law Helene McElwain; and his grandson Ronald McElwain, Jr.. He is also survived by twelve grand-children, twenty seven great grand children and several nieces and nephews.
Burial with full military rites provided by the Malone American Legion will be held at St. Francis Cemetery, in Constable, N.Y. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Augustine's Church, in North Bangor, NY.
