He was predeceased by: his father George Matthews; his wife Janet D. Turner; his daughter Terry Hughes; his mother May Matthews; and his siblings, Lawrence Matthews, Richard Matthews and Betty Matthews Myatt.

He is survived by: his grandchildren, Todd Hughes and Amanda Hughes of Malone, NY; his siblings, John Matthews, Katherine LaBrake and Judy Boadway; his great grandchild Alexis Hosler; and his son-in-law John Hughes.
