He was predeceased by: his parents, Jessie Bates and Irene "Wheeler" Bates; and his wife Barb. He is survived by: his children, Dean Bates, Kevin Bates, Brian Bates (Tonya) and Tonya Bates Madden (Martin). He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren, extended family and friends.
