He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrew Schmitt and Teresa Schmitt; his former wife Marie Wojtczak Schmitt; his siblings, Andrew, Ruth, Robert and Mary Ann; and his grandson Caleb.

He is survived by: his children, Richard Schmitt (Cindy), John Schmitt (Pattie), Will Schmitt (Kim), Dave Schmitt (Jennifer), May Lou Agnello (Joe), Patsy Pettit (Mike) and Linda Perrin (Bryan). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.
