“She (Helen Sleeth) was my first babysitter, and therefore probably the first person I knew outside my family. This was in Caz. Would’ve been circa 1957. To be precise I don’t really remember her face, just her hose-clad calves (I was little, barely out of my crib). When I wouldn’t stop crying, because Mommy wouldn’t come, she corrupted me with CocaCola. A faint memory, but poignant, like Betty Byrne’s lemon platt.”
