He was predeceased by: his parents, J. Richard Smith and Georgia A. Smith; his wife Diane M. Williams; and his siblings, Daniel (Scherry), Kathryn and Ronald (late Kathleen).

He is survived by: his son Jason Richard; and his siblings, Judith, Gary, Jerry (Kathy), Patricia and Donna (Serge Samouel).
