He was predeceased by: his parents, Porter Montgomery and Mattie Lou Montgomery; and his sisters, Jeanette Williams, Annie Ruth Gammage (McCaster), Mae Ella Montgomery, Ella Mae Montgomery and Flossie Mae Grant.
He is survived by: his sons, Isaiah Montgomery, Billy Joe Montgomery Jr., Jeremy Montgomery and Roland Montgomery; his former wife Rita Gorham; and his brothers, Douglas Montgomery, Frank James Montgomery, Porter B. Montgomery, Jr., Willie Joe Montgomery, Don Montgomery and Randy Montgomery, Sr.. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
