He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert MD and Gladys Coates, MD. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Coates; his children, Gary (Mary Beth), David Coates (Michelle) and Catherine Miller (late Gregory); and his grandchildren, Connor Miller, Hannah Coates, Bethany Coates and Maya Miller.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's honor may be made to Kenmore United Methodist Church or Hospice Care of Buffalo.
