He is survived by: his wife Gloria Jean (Dorris); his children, Carl Gene Wharton (Cindy Jane Mallery) of Lansing, N. Y., Kristi Anna Wharton (David McNear Rand) of Barrington, R. I. and Mark Theodore Aplin Wharton (Leslie Aplin) of Bellingham, WA.; his granddaughters, Carolyn Jane Wharton (Lauren Elizabeth Whaley) of South Minneapolis, MN., Katherine McClain Rand (Max Jacob Goldberg) of Los Angeles, CA. and Laura McNear Rand (Trevor Hummon Fry) of Belmont, MA.; his great grandchildren, Margot Brooks Goldberg and June Michel Wharton; his nephew David Wharton of Phoenix, AZ.; and his niece Donna Saddler of White City, OR..
In 1982, he was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to do research at the Sarabi Institute for Plasma Physics in Amadabad, India and to travel the country, giving lectures at major Indian Institutes.
