Scott Cooper Obituary
Scott Andrew Cooper, 87, of Irvington, New York, passed away on July 31st, 2021 of congestive heart failure, with his loving wife of 29 years, Anna Cooper, at his side. He is also survived by his children, Brandon Terry Cooper, Jo Hannah Afton, Angela Lynn Cooper, Camille Stacy Cooper, Susannah Harte and Thomas Harte, as well as his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Scott was born in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from Swarthmore University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which led to a successful career in the plastics industry as an executive with several major plastics manufacturers, including his final position as Vice President of the Mearl Corporation of Peekskill, New York, from which he retired.
He was a devoted husband and father, grandfather and friend. Though he suffered from Alzheimer’s during his final years, he never lost his sense of humor or ability to light up a room with his generous smile and warm welcome. He loved Carl Sagan, the stars, the slot canyons and mountains of the West, hiking, canoeing, camping, traveling, and most of all, photography, a love he picked up in earnest when first stationed in Okinawa with the U.S. Army during his early adulthood. His photo of a shepherd leading his flock along the foothills of Ireland won Scott the grand prize with Gourmet Magazine’s annual photography contest. This was one of many awards he received during his lifetime for his work, all of which captured a glimpse of a breathtaking world, as he saw it. He traveled extensively throughout his lifetime with his wife Anna, including visits to Italy, Ireland, and his favorite: Africa. He lived a full and active life, his heart filled with the love of his wife and family, and an occasional spark for a new adventure. He was a top-notch hugger, and world-class debater, often taking pleasure in a lively conversation about politics, science or philosophy, his afternoon martini close by. He encouraged his children to ‘question everything’ and to listen and think with discernment. As was fitting for an engineer, Scott was also known for his tidy packages, neat block handwriting, and attention to detail. He will be missed by his family and friends, and all those who had the pleasure of his company. We take comfort in knowing that he lived a long, fulfilling life with equal measure of duty and adventure, with a wife at his side who honored him with her tireless devotion and care.
