He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrea Scalera and Michelina Scalera (Russo); his wife Umeko "Amy" Scalera (Hosaka); and his daughter Donna Merante. He is survived by: his daughters, Theresa Eckel (Mark) of Claverack and Karen Warchol (Tim) of Livingston; his son-in-law Thomas Merante; his grandchildren, Nicholas Warchol (Kelsea), Thomas Merante (T. J.), Fiancée Meghan Parmentier, Jon Merante (Lauren) and Chris Merante (Emily Halnon); his great grandchild Luca Merante; his stepgrandchildren, Don Moore (Tonya), Donna Ringwood (Steve) and Kim Van Allen (Paul); and his siblings, Generino, Tony, John, Carlo, Rose, Liz, Lena, Frances, Josie and Anna.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be made to Meals on Wheels or Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene.
