He is survived by: his wife Debra Clark Coates of Hornell; his children, Jeana Potter (Andrew) of North Carolina, Jennifer Voss (Noah) of Indiana, Justine Coates of Hornell, Chad Coates (Katie) of Ossining, NY. and Joseph Coates (Christine) of Illinois; his siblings, Patricia Carlin (Robert) of Victor, NY, Penny Coates (Susan) of Massachusetts, Donald Coates (Pam) of Newfane, NY, Rick Coates (Donna) of Syracuse, Andrew Coates of Painted Post and James Coates (Jessica) of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Emma, Drew Potter, Brandon, Nathan, Madeline Coates, Riley, Sauder and Isaiah Voss; and his great grandchild Kingsley Sauder.
